Distinguishing marks: Numerous scars across his back from whippings and similar punishment. He does not speak of these often unless he is with someone he trusts. He also has a few scars from battle. There is a scar like a star on his chest from when Malice sacrificed his heart. He has pierced ears and wears earrings. Zak’s voice is often soft and calm, low, and melodic. He has a drow accent, but this would only mean something to those who have heard one before.


Zak has enhanced senses. Infravision allows him to see in complete darkness, viewing his world through heat patterns; however, his eyes are sensitive to light. He has enough sensitivity to magic to be disquieted by those who possess it, and will avoid them if possible. He may seem to have supernatural stealth and moves very quietly, appearing from the shadows and without warning. Though not particularly reclusive, he is very wary, especially when surrounded by strangers.

Zaknafein is solemn and taciturn. Punishment for voicing his opinion has left him quiet and reserved, and he is melancholic because he has lived a life he hates in a world he hates. Life in a society that taught betrayal and murder as the best ways to get ahead, beginning in childhood, has left him wary and paranoid.

Zak has a sense of humor, but it shows most easily to those he is comfortable with. Kindness can make him more willing to open up, once he trusts someone. It is a slow process, however, and he will likely be disconcerted and disoriented by any open advances from strangers. He is kind, loyal, loving, and patient, but this also takes time to show itself and he is still one to proceed cautiously. He’s used to the idea that he is replaceable and that no romance is permanent, and that no matter how talented or caring he is, there will always be a better replacement.

He was one of Malice’s many husbands; she never loved him, but did continue to use him for sex after he had been replaced as patron, at least for a time. Owing to this and the matriarchal drow society, he is inherently distrustful of all females. His only friend from the Underdark was Jarlaxle, though they parted on less than cordial terms.

He has learned that the only permanent thing he has to hold on to is his son, Drizzt, though he worries that his own pragmatic nature and less rigid morals wouldn’t hold up to his scrutiny. He still loves Drizzt deeply, however, and sacrificed his life to save his son’s.

Zak is a talented warrior and weapons-master, and his extraordinary abilities helped make his House a force to be reckoned with. In spite of his skills, he imagines a life of peace with his son, fighting only to defend himself or to spar to keep those skills in shape.

He is not averse to sex, but fears humiliation and doesn’t seek it out on his own. He’s good in bed, unsurprising when his prior experience was “do it well or die.” He has things he will not do, however, owing to earlier abuse by Malice.
